Three Wishes makes note of several other facts on their box.
- No Wheat
- No Corn
- No Rice
- No Dairy
- No Oats
- Peanut Free
- No Soy
I’m not sure why they go out of their way to note that the cereal is free of wheat, corn, rice, and oats. I’m not sure why all of these are listed. I understand the wheat and peanuts in case you are gluten sensitive or have peanut allergies. But I’m not sure why the issue with corn, rice, oats, and dairy though. In fact, I’m going to suggest you use high protein dairy milk with this.
Downsides
⚠️ It’s still a cereal — It is still a highly processed product lacking many of the nutrients of the original ingredients.
About the Processing:
- Most of the ingredients get pulverized, heated, shaped, and colored until they barely resemble their original form.
- The fiber that survives is often a shadow of what nature intended.
- Even “whole grain” cereals can be so processed they lose most beneficial compounds beyond basic fiber. Although this cereal is grain free.
How Can We Make It Better?
Using a cup (8oz) of high protein milk to add 11 to 13 grams of protein. Bringing the bowl of cereal to 20 to 22 grams of protein total. All in all, not too bad after all. This milk, posted previously, Fairlife Ultra-Filtered Milk, is lactose free and adds 13gr of protein per cup. This milk, CARBmaster Non-Fat, Ultra-Filtered Milk is also lactose free and adds 11gr or protein per cup. You could try either the plain, chocolate or vanilla flavor with this cereal.
Other options might be to add some raspberries, diced up strawberries, or banana slices. I’m sure there are many other options if you get creative.
Some Closing Thoughts
Many people have set ideas about what food to eat at particular meals. Truth is we can choose to eat any food at any meal.
For those who enjoy cereal for breakfast this can certainly be a better option than many other added sugar varieties. Pairing this with high-protein, low-sugar milk, berries or fruit, can make this a healthier choice comparatively.
For me, Three Wishes tends to be more of a dinner option. Useful for those times when I’ve had a long day and simply do not want to cook a meal or clean up the subsequent mess once I finally arrive home.
Coach Ken’s Verdict
Pairing this cereal with high protein milk, then maybe following up with a high protein yogurt yields 35 to 40 grams of protein. Maybe add an apple, banana or some berries and I have a quick, simple, half-way decent meal. All of us need to find fall-back options that work for us for those times when you don’t want to cook or just don’t have the time. Perhaps not the best, most healthy meal, but a long way from the worst option for sure. Maybe even another case of: the least worst option!
